THE RHAPSODY OF GREEK SEAFARING

Modern Greek shipping is a timeless achievement, born of Greece’s enduring seafaring spirit. It is a rhapsody first composed by the captains of sailing ships—pioneers who wrote the saga of a globally unique accomplishment.

With scarce financial means but an abundance of courage and determination, Greek seafarers and ship captains undertook the difficult transition from sail to steam in the final decade of the 19th century. They not only succeeded in becoming shipowners, but also forged remarkable careers—careers that their descendants would go on to continue and expand.

The exhibition THE RHAPSODY OF GREEK SEAFARING traces the origins and evolution of 57 prominent Greek shipping families over the span of nearly a century—each one rooted in the legacy of a seafarer who dared to enter the world of shipping. Through a rich visual archive of more than 1.200 images—most of them previously unpublished—the exhibition brings to light the modern Greek shipping miracle and its true protagonists: the seafarers themselves and their families.

The exhibition will take place at the Cyclades Gallery, as part of the cultural events organized by the Municipality of Syros – Ermoupolis. The opening will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, and the exhibition will run until July 27, 2025.

Exhibition opening hours:
Daily: 11:00 – 13:00 & 19:30 – 22:30
